LOST, the television series, takes place on a remote South Pacific island, where a plane crash has left 48 survivors stranded. In ENDANGERED SPECIES we read about Faith, an environmental activist and reptile specialist, whose dream industry conference turns into a nightmare and lands her among the survivors on the island. While Locke isn’t suspicious of her, there are more than a few others who openly wonder about how much she uses her knowledge to help – or to terrorize — the other survivo

Since its enactment in 1973, the Endangered Species Act has been hailed as a precedent-setting model for the conservation of endangered species worldwide. It has also been criticized as a threat to economic development and private property rights. Gov. Dirk Kempthorne (R-ID) delivers the keynote address to a conference examining the act. We visited the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Gardens and got a behind the scenes tour the Blue Iguana Recovery Program.

The Cayman Blue Iguana is a critically endangered species, with only 15 of them still living when they were first counted back in the late 1980s. A recovery program was immediately started and the population has started to return as a result. The Blue Iguana is only found on Grand Cayman. They have a similar look to the common green iguana, which is an invasive species that was brought to Grand Cayman from Honduras. Fortunately, the presence of the green iguana does not seem to have an adverse effect on the Blue Iguana.

Some of the Blue Iguanas I photographed are "free roamers" in the park and some were in enclosures as part of the recovery program.

Lycaon pictus is a large canid found only in Africa, especially in savannas and other lightly wooded areas. It is variously called the African wild dog, African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, painted dog, painted wolf, painted hunting dog, spotted dog, or ornate wolf.

The scientific name "Lycaon pictus" is derived from the Greek for "wolf" and the Latin for "painted". It is the only canid species to lack dewclaws on the forelimbs.

Adults typically weigh 18–34 kilograms (40–75 lb).[2] A tall, lean animal, it stands about 75 centimetres (30 in) at the shoulder, with a head and body length averaging about 100 centimetres (39 in) long with a tail of 30 to 45 centimetres (12 to 18 in). Animals in southern Africa are generally larger than those in eastern or western Africa.
